Santa Croce gets its name from the famous Church of Santa Croce, that was demolished at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The district is to the north of the Grand Canal and to its south it is connected to the Cannaregio district by Ponte degli Scalzi and Ponte della Costituzione (English: Constitution Bridge). This district is where the four-kilometre Bridge of Liberty, connects the lagoon city to the mainland, and where the harbour is located. Amongst its most interesting buildings there are the Church of San Nicola da Tolentino, nowadays housing the Faculty of Architecture, and the Church of San Giacomo dall'Orio, one of the city’s oldest churches. Where there was once the church of Santa Croce, today we find the Papadopoli Gardens, open to the general public and only a stone’s throw from Piazzale Roma. There are some museums in Santa Croce: Ca' Pesaro housing the Museum of Oriental Art, and the International Gallery of Modern Art that houses paintings by Klimt, Kandinskij, and Matisse, and overlooking the Grand Canal there is Fondaco dei Turchi that houses the Civic Museum of Natural History. Despite the fact that it is impossible to move around by car in this district, because as it is in all of Venice canals substitute the function of roads, it is quite easy to park near Santa Croce, given its proximity to the mainland and especially to Piazzale Roma.
