The Gothic Quarter is one of the oldest historic centers and areas in the city of Barcelona. It makes up a part of the Ciutat Vella, the highest part of the Monte Táber, located in the Plaza San Jaime. The neighborhood houses different neighborhoods, each with their own personality, including Judería, Santos Justo y Pastor, Santa María del Pino, la Catedral, Santa Ana, La Merced and el Palacio.
The original shape and structure of the Gothic Quarter remained until the 19th century, when the medieval walls were torn down and public squares were created. Only a few pieces of the first wall are still standing in the Plaza de la Seo and the gothic chapel on Ataúlfo street. This wonderful area of Barcelona is known for its pedestrian center, with narrow, crowded streets where it’s difficult to walk or be in a hurry. It’s one of those places that you know how to get to, but never how to leave, it’s too easy to get lost in the streets.
