The Plaza Tetuán

A Tribute to Dr. Bartomeu Robert

In the district of Exiample where the Plaza Tetuán is located, towards the north-west of Barcelona’s Arco del Triunfo. The name of this square dates back to the battle of Tetuán, during which the Spanish troops defeated the Moroccan army in 1860. Before being known by this name, the square was called "Hermenegildo Giner de los Ríos"; since 1939, however, it has been known as "Tetuán". Right in the centre of the square, there is a monument paying tribute to Docter Bartomeu Robert, who used to be the Mayor of Barcelona but for a very short period of time at the end of the 19th century.

This statue was initially located on the Plaza de la Universidad, before being hidden during the Franco regime and it was not until 1984, that it was relocated to its current position.
