Built in 1792, on the foundations of the old theatre of San Benedetto, following the drawing by the architect Giannantonio Selva, the theatre especially during the nineteenth century witnessed the premieres of works by composers and musicians of the calibre of Giuseppe Verdi, Gaetano Donizetti, Vincenzo Bellini and Gioacchino Rossi; even today, it still hosts numerous world premieres.

Everything has been rebuilt according to the original plan, in an act of love towards the surviving fragments, in the words of Aldo Rossi.
