The Pedrera is considered one of Gaudi’s most important masterpieces of the modern age. It’s the fourth and final project, on the road which links Barcelona to the town of Gracia. It was built between 1906 and 1912 by Antonio Gaudí (1852-1926), and it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984. But where does it’s official name, Casa Milà come from? Well the building was comissioned by Perl Milà i Camps and Rosa Segimon i Artell, who made it their residence.
The popular use nicknamed it "La Pedrera" (stone quarry), because of its resemblance to an open quarry. Every aspect of this building is curved, and unlike many other of Gaudí’s masterpeices, it’s not strikingly colourful, getting its colour from the bright stones that were used in its construction. Today, the "Pedrera" houses an open space for exhibitions. You can also discover a reconstruction of the twentieth century bourgeois family’s house. However, the main feature of the building remains its terrace, built with an impressive artistic and symbolic elements, mixed with ventilation towers and fireplaces in the shape of warriors.
