Where to park in LEZ - Restricted traffic zone
With the intensification of measures aimed at improving air quality, Low Emission Zones (LEZ) and the Crit’Air sticker system have become essential for motorists in France. Here’s everything you need to know to drive confidently in these regulated zones.
First of all:
This measure is implemented to avoid transit traffic, meaning motorized trips that only pass through the center. Destination traffic (for shopping, running errands, visiting loved ones, etc...) is, of course, allowed. The perimeter of this ZFE includes the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th districts of Paris since November 5, 2024, and will extend to other districts in 2025.
1. What is a Low Emission Zone (LEZ)?
A Low Emission Zone (LEZ) is a geographical area where vehicle circulation is restricted based on their pollutant emissions level. The goal is to limit air pollution by reducing the presence of the most polluting vehicles.
How does a LEZ work?
Traffic is regulated via the Crit’Air sticker system.
Vehicles are prohibited or allowed based on their Crit’Air category and the restrictions defined by local authorities.
These restrictions evolve over time, becoming increasingly strict.
In Paris and Île-de-France
Since 2019, Paris and the entire area inside the A86 motorway form a LEZ. This includes not only central Paris but also several surrounding municipalities.
2. What is the Crit’Air system?
The Crit’Air sticker is a colored label that classifies vehicles based on their pollutant emissions. This classification considers:
The type of fuel (petrol, diesel, electric, etc.).
The European standard (Euro) corresponding to the vehicle’s year of registration.
The different Crit’Air sticker categories
Crit’Air 0 (green): 100% electric or hydrogen vehicles.
Crit’Air 1 (purple): recent petrol vehicles (Euro 5 and 6 standards).
Crit’Air 2 (yellow): recent diesel and older petrol vehicles.
Crit’Air 3 (orange): older diesel vehicles (Euro 4) and older petrol vehicles.
Crit’Air 4 (burgundy): diesel vehicles Euro 3.
Crit’Air 5 (grey): diesel vehicles Euro 2.
No sticker: very old or unclassified vehicles.
Where and how to obtain the Crit’Air sticker?
It can be ordered on the official website certificat-air.gouv.fr.
Its cost is approximately €4.
3. Current and upcoming restrictions in Paris’ LEZ (2025)
Since July 2023, Crit’Air 3 vehicles are prohibited from circulating in Paris’ LEZ on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Crit’Air 4, 5, and unstickered vehicles were already banned previously.
Next steps
2025: The ban will be extended to Crit’Air 2 vehicles, aiming for circulation exclusively composed of Crit’Air 0 and 1 vehicles by 2030.
4. How does the LEZ impact motorists and parking?
For motorists
Automated controls: Cameras check license plates to identify violations.
Sanctions: Violators may face a fine of €68 (€135 for heavy vehicles).
For parking
Some car parks, like those managed by Parclick, offer a practical solution for motorists who wish to avoid LEZ restrictions. Park outside the LEZ and use public transport to reach your destination.
5. Practical advice for Parclick customers
Plan your trips: Check LEZ maps to see if your vehicle is allowed to circulate.
Use park-and-ride facilities: Parclick offers many parking options on the outskirts of LEZ.
Adapt your vehicle: If you regularly need to enter a LEZ, consider switching to a less polluting vehicle or using alternative solutions like carpooling.
Low Emission Zones and Crit’Air stickers are transforming mobility in France. Thanks to these measures, cities aim to improve air quality while encouraging more sustainable transportation methods. Parclick is here to support you and offer parking solutions adapted to these new regulations.
