The large historical tradition of the Bank of Spain dates back to the 18th century, but it wasn´t until 1856 that it officially became known as the Bank of Spain. The first headquarters was located in the Cinco Gremios Mayores building, situated on Atocha street, under the merger of the Bank of Isabel II with the Bank of San Fernando in 1847. It wasn´t until 1891 when King Alfonso XIII and his mother, the ruling Queen María Cristina, unveiled the Bank of Spain headquarters that we know today. The building was completed by the architects Eduardo de Adaro, Severiano Sainz de la Lastra and José María Aguilar y Vela, who were honored with gold medals in the 1884 National Exposition of Fine Arts. In 1999, the Bank of Spain was declared a Place of Cultural Interest of Spain. Although there were previously a few expansions, it wasn´t until 2003 when the reconstruction of the building started, completely closing the block, to continue the established projects by the Bank and keep in the same line of original architecture.
