What we now know as the Matadero Madrid was formed by part of the old slaughterhouse and livestock market of the city. In total, there were 48 buildings that served the industrial slaughterhouse and market. In 1996, it closed indefinitely, leaving behind an architectural ensemble available for other purposes.
At the start of the 80´s, the function of some of the facilities changed radically. For example, the stables were converted to the official headquarters of the National Dance Company and the National Ballet of Spain.
At the full closure of the industrial slaughterhouse in 1996, all of the previous facilities were changed to large cultural spaces, which we know now as Matadero Madrid. This social and cultural center was definitively opened in 2007.
