Opened in 1911, the Bioparco di Roma started as a zoo, but in 1998 it was converted into a real natural park, where animals, many at risk of extinction, were free to live and reproduce in their habitat while they were studied with the most respect, and where there are also numerous organised activities of environmental education.
Currently the zoological park hosts numerous species of animals, 222 to be exact, and a total of about 1144 animals, including mammals, birds and reptiles, from all continents.
