Parking in Alhambra (Granada)

The Alhambra welcomes close to three million visitors a year, making it the most visited monument in Spain. The official car park is La Alhambra Parkia, managed by Parkia, located near the main entrance on the hill. Spots fill up fast — especially between April and October. Is there parking at the Alhambra in Granada?

Yes. The Alhambra complex has its own on-site car park with 500 outdoor spaces, guarded 24 hours a day. It is divided into four numbered zones plus a separate area for buses and caravans. As you drive in, the zones appear in this order:

• P4 — the first zone you encounter after entering the car park road. Furthest from the monument entrance, so it generally has more availability.
• P3 — the next zone as you continue along the road towards the entrance.
• P2 — reserved spaces for visitors with reduced mobility.
• P1 — at the very end of the road, right next to the Access and Ticket Pavilion. The most convenient zone and the first to fill up.

Watch out for the bus parking area: near the roundabout at the entrance there is a separate area for buses and motorhomes that can look like regular parking. It charges bus rates — up to €6 for 20 minutes for a private car. If you walk up to the car park without a reservation, payment is made at the automated machines before you return to your vehicle — the machines accept cash and cards, and you have 10 minutes to exit after paying. With a Parclick reservation, payment is handled at the time of booking, so you simply drive in, park, and leave without queuing at the machines.

Is there free parking near the Alhambra?

There is no free parking within the Alhambra complex itself, and the hill roads leading up to it are restricted — private vehicles cannot access the site from the city centre. On-street parking in the immediate vicinity of the Alhambra is extremely limited and unreliable. The most practical free option is to park in the lower part of Granada and use public transport to reach the Alhambra:

• Several garages in the city centre (see list below) offer competitive day rates that are often less stressful than hunting for a kerbside space.
• From any central car park, you can take the lines 30 or 32 city minibus. Due to ongoing restoration work on the Cuesta de Gomérez, the bus stop has moved from Plaza Nueva to Plaza de Isabel la Católica (about 100 metres away). The bus stops at the Ticket Pavilion (entrance nearest to the Generalife), the Torre de las Cabezas (near the Nasrid Palaces), and the Puerta de la Justicia (nearest to the Alcazaba).
• If you prefer to walk, the route from Plaza Nueva up Cuesta de Gomérez is steep and takes around 20–25 minutes. Alternatively, you can ascend via the Cuesta de los Chinos from the Paseo de los Tristes.

What time does the Alhambra car park open and close?

La Alhambra Parkia is open 24 hours a day. However, access to the Alhambra monument itself is governed by separate opening hours and your ticket slot — the car park stays open regardless. If you are visiting in the evening for a night visit, or arriving very early to be first in the queue, the car park will be available.

How to drive to the Alhambra car park

The Alhambra cannot be reached by private car from the city centre — the historic streets in that direction are restricted to authorised vehicles only. The correct approach is via the southern ring road:

• Take the Ronda Sur (A-395).
• At the Serrallo tunnel, take exit 5A.
• Follow Avenida de Santa María de la Alhambra, then Camino Viejo del Cementerio.
• Follow the signs for Parking Alhambra or Complejo Alhambra.

The Alhambra — practical information

The Alhambra is a palatine city situated on the Sabika hill in Granada, Andalusia. Its name derives from the Arabic al-Qal'a al-hamra — "the red castle" — a reference to the reddish hue of its towers. Construction began in the 9th century, and the complex as it stands today dates primarily from the Nasrid dynasty of the 13th–14th centuries.
