Naples is the third largest city in Italy and the capital of Campania. Driving in the centre requires navigating a combination of historic Restricted Traffic Zones (ZTL), narrow streets and high-density traffic. Piazza Garibaldi — often called the Rettifilo — is the main transport hub of Naples and the location of Napoli Centrale railway station. It is also the arrival point for the Circumvesuviana regional railway, the Alibus airport shuttle and many intercity coaches. Several garages are available in this area for both short and long stays, making it the most practical area to park if you plan to continue your journey by public transport or are heading to Pompeii or the Amalfi Coast.

Parking near the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona

The Stadio Diego Armando Maradona — known as the Stadio San Paolo until its renaming in honour of Diego Maradona in 2020 — is the home ground of SSC Napoli, with a capacity of approximately 54,000 spectators. The stadium is located in the Fuorigrotta district, near the Mostra d'Oltremare exhibition centre and the Palapartenope arena.

Parking for a day trip to Pompeii from Naples

Pompeii is approximately 25 km south-east of Naples and one of the most visited archaeological sites in the world. Many visitors to Naples make it a day trip. Two approaches are common:

• By train — the Circumvesuviana railway runs from Napoli Centrale (and Napoli Piazza Garibaldi) directly to Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri station, adjacent to the main site entrance. The journey takes around 35 minutes. This is the most practical option if you are based in Naples. Park at a central Naples garage and take the train from Piazza Garibaldi.
• By car — take the A3 motorway south towards Salerno and exit at Pompei. Naples ZTL — Restricted Traffic Zones

Naples operates a series of Restricted Traffic Zones (Zone a Traffico Limitato, or ZTL) in its most historic and congested areas. Access is monitored by cameras, and fines for unauthorised entry are significant. The active ZTL areas in Naples are:

• ZTL Centro Antico

• ZTL Belledonne, Martiri and Poerio

On-street parking in Naples is marked by blue lines (paid) and yellow lines (residents only). Getting around Naples by public transport

Once your car is parked, Naples has a well-developed public transport network:

• Metro Line 1 — runs from Garibaldi (Central Station) to Piscinola, with stops at Toledo, Dante, Museo, Materdei, Salvator Rosa, Quattro Giornate and Vanvitelli among others. The most useful line for the city centre.

Naples — what to see

Naples is a UNESCO World Heritage city with one of the richest concentrations of historic monuments in Europe. Key sights include the Maschio Angioino castle, Castel dell'Ovo, Piazza del Plebiscito with the Royal Palace and the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola, and the Umberto I Gallery.
