Why is Piazzale Roma the only place to park in Venice?

Venice is built across 121 islands connected by 436 bridges. There are no roads in the historic centre — only canals, alleyways and pedestrian paths. The only way to drive into Venice is via the Ponte della Libertà, a four-kilometre bridge linking the mainland to the island. Piazzale Roma sits at the far end of this bridge: it is the car terminal of Venice, and the last point accessible by road.

The car parks here are large, but demand is consistently high throughout the year. Venice attracts visitors year-round, and during events like the Carnival, the Biennale or the Film Festival, spaces run out days in advance. Booking through Parclick ensures your spot is waiting for you when you arrive.

Getting around Venice from Piazzale Roma

Once parked, Venice is explored entirely on foot or by water. From Piazzale Roma you have several options:

  • ACTV water buses (vaporetti): the main public water transport network of Venice. Lines depart from Piazzale Roma along both the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal, reaching Rialto, San Marco, the Lido, Murano and Burano. Tickets are purchased at the ACTV desk or machines in Piazzale Roma.
  • People Mover: an automated cable car connecting Piazzale Roma to the island of Tronchetto in a few minutes. Useful if you park at Tronchetto and want to reach Piazzale Roma, or vice versa.
  • Airport shuttles: direct buses and water taxis connect Piazzale Roma to Venice Marco Polo Airport.
  • Water taxis: private taxi boats for direct transfers to any destination in the lagoon.

Venice Santa Lucia train station is a short walk from Piazzale Roma, across the Ponte della Costituzione bridge.

Budget alternatives — parking outside Venice

If you're visiting for multiple days and want to keep costs down, parking outside the island is significantly cheaper. Here are the most practical options:

Mestre + train: Parking near Mestre station on the mainland is the most affordable choice. Regional trains take a few minutes to reach Venice Santa Lucia station, which is a short walk from Piazzale Roma via the Ponte della Costituzione. Mestre car parks are a fraction of the cost of parking on the island.

Terminal Fusina: Terminal Fusina, located in the industrial area of Marghera on the mainland, offers parking with a direct ferry connection into central Venice. A good option if you're arriving from the south.

Tronchetto: the island of Tronchetto is right next to Piazzale Roma and accessible via the People Mover. It offers additional parking capacity and is connected to the ACTV water bus network.
