Yes, one of the main reasons being that Nice is a city full of history! It is one of the cities founded by the Greeks, along what we know today as the French Riviera. The Romans, who dominated the Mediterranean at the time, annexed the city and its surroundings in the 2nd century BC. Its history during the following centuries was eventful, especially given its coastal location and its proximity to territories such as the kingdom of Savoy, that of Piedmont-Sardinia. It was in 1860 that the city of Nice was finally integrated into France.
Today, museums and ancient monuments remind the rich history of the city: the Villa des Arènes, which houses the Archaeology Museum (as well as the Matisse Museum), the Lascaris Palace, not to mention religious buildings such as the Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur church. Other buildings have disappeared, such as the fortress of Nice which stood on the hill known as the castle (destroyed during a siege in 1704).
Among the many history museums in the city, you can also visit the Terra-Amata Museum of Human Paleontology (located on Mount Boron and dedicated to prehistoric times), or the Resistance Museum.
Old Nice is the oldest part of Nice. A rather narrow area by the sea but full of monuments and activities, this district is delimited by the port, boulevard Jean-Jaurès, place Garibaldi and, to the south, by the quai des États-Unis (extension of the Promenade des Anglais). This area is served by the T1 tramway line, thanks to the stops Opéra - Vieille Ville and Cathédrale - Vieille Ville, and even the Garibaldi station a little further on. So you can easily get to Vieux-Nice from the two car parks we offer near the center of Nice: Nicetoile and Gare de Nice - Thiers, which are both close to the T1 line. Moreover, from the Nicetoile parking, you can also walk since it is less than 10 minutes from the Old Town.
This area is particularly charming. Here you can admire the port and the Bay of Angels from, or walk through the park of the castle hill. Several religious buildings are also worth visiting, such as the Sainte-Réparate cathedral (place Rossetti), the chapel of La Miséricorde or other churches, such as those of Saint-François-de-Paule, or of Saint-Martin-Saint-Augustin on the place Saint-Augustin. Finally, you will find the Nice Côte d'Azur Opera House in the south of Vieux-Nice, literally a stone's throw from the beach.
In the south of the city, the beach of Nice stretches over 7 kilometers. As a matter of fact, there are no less than 20 public beaches, and almost as many private beaches. From the Vieux-Nice, you will be able to particularly enjoy the Beau Rivage beach, the Castel beach or the Opéra beach.
Additionally, you can enjoy one of the most famous promenades in the world: the Promenade des Anglais, which runs along the beach from the Nice-Côte d'Azur airport to the Vieux-Nice (the continuation of the Quai des Etats-Unis). The Promenade des Anglais is the center of festivities such as the Nice Carnival, and you can stroll along it while enjoying the sun and the view of the Bay of Angels. Moreover, along the sea, several points of interest will allow you to take interesting pictures, like the quai of Rauba-Capeu.
It is nice to walk through the streets of Nice. You will be able to discover the Saint-François square, the Cours Saleya, the Garibaldi square, the Masséna square... Many of the city's squares date back to the 19th century, and in addition to the surrounding buildings, you will be able to admire various statues (such as the monument to Garibaldi). If you like pétanque, which is a very popular sport in Southern France, you can also go to the Place Arson, near the port of Nice, where it is possible to watch some games.
Passionate about culture and art? Then take a look at the different museums that the city offers. One of the most famous is the Matisse Museum which, as well as the archaeology museum, is located in the villa of the Arenas of Cimiez (former Gubernatis palace); this museum gathers an impressive collection of paintings by Matisse. The Marc Chagall National Museum is also located in the Cimiez district. Don't miss the Fine Arts Museum, the Asian Arts Museum, and many other museums dedicated to art or history. Finally, the natural history museum of Nice (not far from the Garibaldi square) will allow you to discover collections mainly focused on the marine world.
Furthermore, Nice and its surroundings have an abundance of castles. You can take a look at the fort of Mount Alban, a well-preserved fortress dating back to the 16th century, or also the Château de l'Anglais.
Finally, the Mount Boron Park is an excellent destination for those who like a good walk. It rises to almost 200 meters and from there you can enjoy a good view of the Bay of Angels and the hill of Nice Castle.
