How much does parking cost in Venice?

Parking prices in Venice vary significantly depending on whether you park on the island or on the mainland. Island car parks are more expensive but place you closest to the historic centre. Mainland options are cheaper and often include public transport connections into Venice.

Where to park in Venice — your options

Because no cars are allowed in the historic centre of Venice, visitors must choose one of four main parking strategies. Each has different trade-offs between cost, convenience and proximity to the island.

Piazzale Roma (island): the car terminal of Venice, at the far end of the Liberty Bridge. It is the closest point to the historic centre where you can park a car. From here, the entire city is walkable or reachable by water bus (vaporetto). The most convenient option if you have heavy luggage or are staying nearby. Prices are higher than mainland alternatives. Tronchetto (island): the artificial island adjacent to Piazzale Roma, connected via the People Mover cable car. Parking at Tronchetto is slightly cheaper than Piazzale Roma and offers direct vaporetto connections to the historic centre and the cruise terminal.

Mestre (mainland): the nearest city to Venice on the mainland. Parking near Mestre station is the most affordable option — prices are significantly lower than island car parks. Regional trains run from Venice Mestre to Venice Santa Lucia station in around 10 minutes, dropping you at the entrance of the historic centre.

Terminal Fusina (mainland): Terminal Fusina is located in the industrial zone of Marghera, south of Mestre. It offers outdoor parking with a direct ferry connection into central Venice. A practical option if you're arriving from the south or heading straight to the Giudecca area.

Is there free parking in Venice?

Free parking on the island of Venice is virtually impossible — there is no on-street parking on the island, and car park capacity is entirely paid. Free parking in Mestre is limited and fills up quickly, especially at weekends and during peak season. The most reliable way to avoid paying peak rates is to book your space in advance through Parclick: confirmed prices are often lower than walk-up rates.

Can you drive in Venice?

No — it is not possible to drive through Venice's historic centre. The city is built on a lagoon and the streets are in fact canals. The only road access to the island is the Liberty Bridge, which leads directly to Piazzale Roma. Beyond that point, all movement within Venice is on foot or by water. Locals and visitors alike rely on vaporetti (public water buses), gondolas and water taxis to get around.

Parking in Venice for a cruise or the airport

Getting around Venice once you've parked

From Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto, the entire city is reachable by ACTV water bus. Lines run along the Grand Canal toward Rialto and San Marco, and along the Giudecca Canal toward the Lido, Murano and Burano. Tickets are purchased at Piazzale Roma at the ACTV desks or machines. Venice Santa Lucia train station is a few minutes' walk from Piazzale Roma across the Constitution Bridge.

From Mestre, regional trains reach Venice Santa Lucia in approximately 10 minutes. From Terminal Fusina, the ferry service connects directly to central Venice via the Giudecca Canal.
