Welcome to Madrid

Carlos III commanded the Puerta de Alcalá, of which Ana Belén and Víctor Manuel wrote a song, to be built with a monumental aspect in the style of the Roman arches of triumph. When the city was fortified, the Puerta de Alcalá was one of the five actual doors through which you could enter the historical center of Madrid, and it welcomed the travelers coming to visit the city.

One of the hidden curiosities of the door is that each face is different. The reason for this peculiarity was because the architect, Francesco Sabatini, presented two projects to King Carlos III. He impressed the king so much that they finally settled on both designs, each one representing a face. If you are observant, you will see hinges in the archways, testimonials to the former service as a door to the city. Here, they installed bars that opened and closed according to the pace of the travelers.

Today, the Puerta de Alcalá is one of the symbols of the capital that is most cherished by madrileños. If you travel to Madrid, we recommend that you visit the monument and its surroundings thoroughly.
