The 11th arrondissement is spread over four districts: Saint-Ambroise, la Roquette, la Folie-Méricourt and Sainte-Marguerite. The areas boundaries are Rue du Faubourg-du-Temple to the north, Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine to the south, Boulevard du Temple and Boulevard Beaumarchais to the west, and finally, to the east, Boulevard de Belleville, Boulevard de Ménilmontant and Boulevard de Charonne. 11th Arrondissement of Paris
Officially the Popincourt District
The 11th arrondissement, one of the 20 arrondissements of Paris, is located in the east of Paris. It is surrounded by the Père Lachaise cemetery, the Saint-Antoine hospital, the Saint-Louis hospital and the famous Marais district. This Parisian district is distinguished by its large population and its density: it is one of the most populated districts of Paris after the 15th arrondissement, and the best served by the metro (with no less than 25 metro stations!).
As a mainly residential neighbourhood, the 11th arrondissement has a wide variety of bars and nightclubs. There are also many green spaces (e.g. Square de la Roquette), concert cafés, markets and theatres (Théâtre de la Bastille), as well as the Cirque d’hiver, the Bataclan, the Édith Piaf Museum and several places of worship for different faiths.
This area of Paris also has its part to play in history. There were three prisons throughout history, none of which are in use today: the Bastille fortress, the Petite Roquette and the Grande Roquette. The last one to be demolished was the Petite Roquette, in 1974.
Among the main roads of the 11th arrondissement, you can drive through the Avenue de la République or the Boulevard Voltaire which cross the arrondissement, but also the Rue de la Roquette, the Rue Saint-Maur and the Avenue Philippe-Auguste.
