But now the only thing standing is the Colonne de Juillet, which has a place of pride in the middle of the square. Erected in 1840 to commemorate the fall of the monarchy and the citizens who fought for the prisoners’ freedom, the large monument is named for the month in which the victory took place. And perhaps more famously, July 14th is Bastille Day, a French national holiday, in reference to the storming of the Bastille.

Straddling 3 different Paris districs, the 4th, 11th, and 12th, the Place de la Bastille and its surroundings have become very lively with crowds of people and heavy traffic.
